The Gothic Church by the Chao Phraya River

Gothic Church

Located on the riverbank next to Kularb Witthaya School amidst the Chinese community in Talat Noi, This Gothic church was initially built by the Portuguese settlers from the Kudi Chin community on the Thonburi side.

However, most of later temple patrons were the Chinese Christian in the area. The temple was named Kalawar after the mountain Kalawario on which Jesus had allegedly been crucified. The king generously granted the land for its construction in 1786.

The now-standing church is the third building between 1891 and 1898 in the Fifth Reign. It is in the much-favored Franco-gothic style with a high steeple and pointed arch portals and windows. The stained-glass windows depict biblical stories. The high pointed fa?ade is decorated with a cross.
